Study Suggests Federal Reserve Rate Hikes Weighing On Consumer Sentiment

Bloomberg reports the “gloomy” consumer sentiment “amid a surprisingly strong economy has befuddled many economists, but a paper by researchers from the IMF and Harvard University, including former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, proposes that elevated borrowing costs may solve the mystery.” Bloomberg explains the paper “argues that increases in the cost of living due to higher financing expenditures faced by consumers – which are not factored into inflation – underpin the recent divergence between official inflation data and consumer sentiment.” The researchers claim consumers “are including the cost of money in their perspective on their economic health, while economists are not.”

Ahead Of President’s Meeting With Congressional Leaders, White House Says Keeping Government Funded A “Basic” Duty

The New York Times reports President Biden “will convene the top four congressional leaders at the White House on Tuesday as lawmakers swiftly run out of time to strike a deal to avert another partial government shutdown.” Biden “plans to discuss the urgency of legislation to keep federal funding going past midnight on Friday, as well as his requests for billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine and Israel, said Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary.” Jean-Pierre said, “A basic, basic priority or duty of Congress is to keep the government open. So, that’s what the president wants to see. He’ll have those conversations.”

Reuters reports that Senate Minority Leader McConnell “dismissed the shutdown danger on Monday as he exited a meeting in” Senate Majority Leader Schumer’s office, “telling reporters: ‘No, we’re not going to shut the government down.’” Earlier, Schumer told reporters, “Democrats are doing everything we can to avoid a shutdown.” After covering an array of comments from various members on the situation, the Wall Street Journal says that Congressional leaders could abandon plans to finalize their spending bills this week, and instead opt for a fourth continuing resolution.

Stocks Fall Slightly To Begin The Week

CNBC reports that the S&P 500 “slipped on Monday as the broad market index retreated from its record notched last Friday and investors awaited key inflation data.” The S&P 500 “fell 0.38% to 5,069.53,” the Nasdaq Composite “declined 0.13% to close at 15,976.25,” and the Dow Jones Industrial Average “slipped 62.30 points, or 0.16% to close at 39,069.23.”
