ISM: Domestic Manufacturing PMI Hit A Seven Month Low, But Data Shows Potential Rebound

Reuters reports factory employment fell to a seven-month low due to layoffs with a report from the Institute for Supply Management showing ā€œits manufacturing PMI fell to 47.8 last month from 49.1 in January.ā€ However, manufacturing also reported gains in February with ā€œeight manufacturing industries reporting growth...including apparel, leather and allied products, primary metals, chemical products and transportation equipment,ā€ providing evidence of a potential rebound.

University Of Michigan Data Show US Consumer Sentiment Fell In February

Axios reported a University of Michigan survey showed that ā€œU.S. consumer sentiment cooled slightly in February, ... down 2.7% from January, but up 14.9% from February 2023.ā€ University of Michigan Director of the Surveys of Consumers Joanne Hsu said, ā€œConsumers perceived few changes in the state of the economy since the start of the new year, and they appear to be assured that inflation will continue on a favorable trajectory.ā€ Axios adds that ā€œa different gauge of consumer sentiment released earlier this week by the Conference Board showed a pullback in February, interrupting three months of rising sentiment.ā€

Nasdaq Hits New All-Time High After Gaining Another 1.74% This Week

CNBC reports the Nasdaq Composite ā€œrose to an all-time high Friday, surpassing its 2021 record,ā€ as it ā€œadvanced 1.14% to 16,274.94, notching a new high of 16,302.24 during the session. A day earlier, the index closed at its first record since November 2021.ā€ The S&P 500 ā€œadded 0.80% to 5,137.08 for its first close above the 5,100 threshold,ā€ and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ā€œgained 90.99 points, or 0.23%, to 39,087.38.ā€ CNBC adds, ā€œOn a weekly basis, the Nasdaq added 1.74%, while the S&P 500, which also popped to a record close on Thursday, advanced 0.95%,ā€ and ā€œboth indexes notched their seventh positive week over the last eight.ā€ The Wall Street Journal attributes the stock market gains in part to Nvidia achieving a $2 trillion valuation.
