Senate Appropriations Chair Warns Risks Of Partial Government Shutdown Are RisingBloomberg reports Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray āwarned Thursday that the risks of a Jan. 20 partial government shutdown are rising because the two parties are still sparring over annual spending limits.ā The ongoing āconflict over the overall amount of annual spending, which is needed to pass full-year funding bills, threatens to force at least a partial government funding lapse.ā Murray said, āItās absolutely dangerous.ā House Speaker Johnson āhas said he wonāt support any new temporary spending bills to postpone a shutdown.ā He and Senate Majority Leader Schumer āhave been trying to negotiate the spending level for weeks. Murray warned if no deal is done next week, when a three-week recess begins, lawmakers wonāt have time to complete detailed spending bills before the shutdown deadline. Murray said sheās concerned the inaction will force a full-year stopgap measure that would trigger across-the-board cuts to defense and domestic spending and prevent detailed adjustments to agency spending priorities.ā Saudis And Russia Urge All OPEC+ Members To Commit To Output CutsReuters reports that Saudi Arabia and Russia, āthe worldās two biggest oil exporters, on Thursday called for all OPEC+ members to join an agreement on output cuts for the good of the global economy only days after a fractious meeting of the producersā club. Hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin went to Riyadh in a hastily arranged visit to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kremlin released a joint Russian-Saudi statement about the conclusion of their discussions. ... āIn the field of energy, the two sides commended the close cooperation between them and the successful efforts of the OPEC+ countries in enhancing the stability of global oil markets,ā said the statement released by the Kremlin.ā Nasdaq Closes Higher; Dow, S&P Snap 3-Day Losing StreakCNBC reports, āStocks rose Thursday, allowing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 to break three-day losing streaks as Fridayās all-important jobs report loomed.ā The S&P 500 āclimbed 0.80% to 4,585.59, while the blue-chip Dow added 62.95 points, or 0.17%, to 36,117.38.ā The Nasdaq Composite āadvanced 1.37% to 14,339.99 as technology stocks outperformed. Google-parent Alphabet gained more than 5% as traders cheered the companyās launch of its Gemini artificial intelligence model.
