Regional Fed Surveys Show Employers Expect To Hire Less In 2024

Bloomberg reports several regional Federal Bank surveys show that US employers ā€œexpect to hire less in 2024...a trend thatā€™s set to limit wage gains and cool inflation pressures.ā€ The data ā€œshow that the central bankā€™s efforts to slow growth and temper inflation are filtering through into the economy. The results, while marking a slowdown, donā€™t indicate an outright contraction in payrolls.ā€

Gas Prices Will Fall In 2024, GasBuddy Predicts

CNN reports, ā€œGas prices will fall in 2024 for the second year in a row, according to GasBuddy projections shared exclusively with CNN.ā€ GasBuddy ā€œexpects US gas prices will average $3.38 a gallon in the key election year of 2024.ā€ That would be ā€œa significant improvement from 2023ā€™s average of $3.51 a gallon and an even bigger drop from 2022ā€™s average of $3.95.ā€ GasBuddy forecasts ā€œAmericans will spend about $32 billion less on fuel than in 2023 and $79 billion less than in 2022.ā€

NYTimes Sues Microsoft, OpenAI For Using Stories To Train Chatbots

The AP reports the New York Times ā€œis striking back against the threat that artificial intelligence poses to the news industry, filing a federal lawsuit Wednesday against OpenAI and Microsoft seeking to end the practice of using its stories to train chatbots.ā€ The lawsuit, which comes after what appears to be a ā€œbreakdown in talks between the newspaper and the two companies,ā€ argues the chatbot threatens journalistsā€™ ā€œlivelihood by effectively stealing billions of dollars worth of work.ā€ In its own reporting on the suit, the New York Times says the lawsuit ā€œcould test the emerging legal contours of generative A.I. technologies...and could carry major implications for the news industry.ā€

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that for its part, OpenAI said through a spokesperson, ā€œWe respect the rights of content creators and owners and are committed to working with them to ensure they benefit from AI technology and new revenue models. ... Our ongoing conversations with the New York Times have been productive and moving forward constructively, so we are surprised and disappointed with this development. Weā€™re hopeful that we will find a mutually beneficial way to work together, as we are doing with many other publishers.ā€

CDC Data Shows Covid Variant JN1 Has Become Most Common Strain In US

The New York Times reports that as the holiday season ā€œwinds down and Covid-19 cases start to pick up, a variant called JN.1 has now become the most common strain of the virus spreading across the United States.ā€ JN.1, ā€œwhich emerged from the variant BA.2.86 and was first detected in the United States in September, accounted for 44 percent of Covid cases nationwide by mid-December, up from about 7 percent in late November, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.ā€ JN.1ā€™s momentum ā€œthis month suggests that it may be more transmissible or better at evading our immune systems than other variants currently circulating, according to a C.D.C. report published Dec. 22.ā€
