The increase marked a rebound from downwardly revised 0.2% decline in October and a surprise to economists who had anticipated another decrease in sales. House Minority Leader Says Government Will Shut Down If House GOP Keeps Demanding Funding Below Agreed To LevelsThe Hill reports House Minority Leader Jeffries “warn[ed] Thursday that the government will close its doors if House Republicans continue to demand funding levels below those negotiated in the debt ceiling agreement – complete with side deals – earlier in the year.” Jeffries said during a press briefing, “It’s fair to say that we are either going to agree to keep the agreement that had been reached in terms of the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act, with the top-line spending number at [$1.659 trillion]...or the extreme MAGA Republicans in the House are going to shut down the government, which will hurt the American people.” Jeffries’ comments “came as congressional leaders are struggling to reach an agreement on the spending caps – or ‘top-line’ numbers – governing federal appropriations for fiscal 2024.” Stocks Close Higher On ThursdayCNBC reports that the Dow Jones Industrial Average “closed higher on Thursday as the 10-year Treasury tumbled below 4% and a surprise gain in retail sales gave investors further confidence 2024 would bring a soft economic landing.” The DJIA “closed at a record high, ending the day up 158 points, or 0.43% at 37,248.35.” The S&P 500 “added 0.26% to end the day at 4,719.55, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.19% to 14,761.56.” Previous Top Stories | |||||||||||
